Mass Effect

Mass Effect 3 Alternate Ending

Shepard walks away from the three paths that were opened up for him and towards a window, "I refuse," Shepard said, "I believe that the army that I have constructed will defeat your Reapers."
"They cannot," the Catalysts said as he stood beside Shepard, "you are a fool for believing in your army."
"No you are the fool," Shepard said, "I helped unite the Quarians and the Geth. They had been fighting for three hundred years, but with my help I stopped the war and united them together."
"That peace will not last," the Catalyst said, "eventually a Quarian will kill a geth and the war will be restarted. If you destroy all synthetic life the peace will last."
"No, I won't destroy all synthetic life. It won't bring peace between the Quarians and the Geth it will just destroy the Geth and that is not peace. I believe the Quarians and Geth can live in harmony," Shepard said, "perhaps a Quarian like Xen may try to dissect a geth but if a treaty is made then I believe the war that you speak of will not come to fruition."
"You stopped the Genophage of the Krogan," the Catalyst said, "History will repeat itself," the Catalyst said, "The Krogan will eventually want more and when that happens, war will come back."
"If the Krogan begin to overpopulate, but if they limit how many children each Krogan family can have that will stop them." Shepard said, "Besides with Wrex in charge I believe that war won't happen."
"Your army is losing; the Reapers will win and when that happens, all those deaths will be on your head. Your army cannot win." The Catalyst said.
Shepard was suddenly tapped on the shoulder by a Keeper. The Keeper tilted its head then made a weird noise as it looks at the Catalyst.
"He is half dead," the Catalyst said, "he could never defeat that trial."
"What trial?" Shepard asked.
"There is another option," the Catalyst said, "if you take the trial and survive the reapers will be destroyed."
"What is the trial?" Shepard asked.
"It is similar to what you did to the reaper corruption of the Geth," The Catalyst said, "if you can defeat Harbinger in his mind then the Reapers will be destroyed."
"I'll take it," Shepard said.
"In that case," the Catalyst said, "you are more of a fool than I thought."
Shards of lightning suddenly came and shocked Shepard, he fell down unconscious.

"Shepard," Shepard could hear Harbinger's voice, Shepard vision cleared and he could see Harbinger, he was smaller than he normally looked but after Shepard got a closer look he could see that he was the Normandy. "The Catalyst has engaged the trial, you are the Normandy because that is your ship. This is my true size, the size of our wills are the same so now the battle commences."

A possible battle similar to the battle in Nintendo's Starfox64 hard ending against Andross's true form just a bit more complicated.

After what seemed like hours, Shepard eventually woke up, victorious and he looks at the Catalyst, "I defeated harbinger."
"Yes, I know," The Catalyst look outwards and saw a defeated Harbinger exploding followed by the other Reapers. You defeated Harbinger, you did something I did not think possible."
Shepard then started to leave the place he was in, "You may have defeated the Reapers, but this is only a temporary victory," the Catalyst said, "my predictions will become true, they always have and they always will."
"You think too much like a machine," Shepard said, "Just watch, war will eventually return but then peace will come that is the cycle of life that cannot be broken for each are needed for the other to survive. But during war people will look for peace, and eventually people will forget what war was like and that is then war will return but peace will eventually return. We don't need Reapers to teach us that, for that is something that all sentient life knows. It will take time but I'm looking forward to spending the rest of my life with Tali and I hope we have a long, peaceful, life together." Shepard then left the area and the Catalyst alone.
"Admiral," Shepard said, "this is Shepard, mission complete, I'm heading back to Earth now."
"Good work, Shepard," Hacket said.
"Anderson is dead," Shepard said, "I'll bring his body back for a proper burial."
"Understood," Hacket said, "see you back on earth."

A few hours
Shepard was on the Normandy in the communications room, talking to the council and Admiral Hacket. "So what did you find while you were on the Citadel?" Hacket asked.
"I found the Catalyst," Shepard said, "the Catalyst was the Citadel's AI that created the Reapers to bring order to the Chaos of organic life."
"So how did you defeat Harbinger?" asked Councillor Tevos.
"I entered Habinger's brain and destroyed him from the inside," Shepard said, "When Harbinger died the other reapers also died."
"I see," Tevos said, "Shepard with everything that has happened and now with Anderson and Udina dead, we would like to extend and invitation for you to become a councillor."
"What?!" Shepard said surprised.
"After everything that you have done for us, saving us not once but twice and saving the entire galaxy." Tevos said, "We would be honoured to have you as a councillor along with us."

Reject Offer:
"I'm sorry, Councillor's," Shepard said, "but I just don't see myself being able to be part of the politics. If you want my recommendation then I say Admiral Hacket would be a good choice. And now if you'll excuse me I need a vacation after this."
The holograms of the council and Hacket disappear and Shepard walks away.

Accept Offer:
"I accept your offer," Shepard said, "but first before I get blasted with paperwork I think I need to take a long vacation."
The holograms of the council and Hacket disappear and Shepard walks away.

I will be creating several epilogues fanfics based on the romance options of the ME series. Look for the links in the description or watch my account for updates. Hope you enjoyed this and maybe this ending or something similar to it will be a DLC ending in ME3 for a happy ending choice.
If you liked this and want an ME3 ending DLC to be like this then please share this fanfic with your friends and other Mass Effect fans.
Copyright Mass Effect and all its character to Bioware/EA
My thoughts of a better happy ending to Mass Effect 3.

Edit: I made this fic before hearing about the indoctrination theory so this fic is based off just having another choice and not about the indoctrination theory. However I am creating a indoctrination theory ending fic as well. :P

Perhaps my mind is plagued by Bioware at the moment... thinking realistically that sometimes regardless of your choices, things happen anyways... but your ending seemed unrealistic.

It seemed too simple.

"You think too much like a machine," Shepard said,"
sounds like the happy go lucky ending that players want badly for playing a Paragon.
and honestly it sounds like something a Pro Human would say.
Basically, someone who doesn't look at the picture and realize humans are not always going to win.
A big "problem" with ME3 is that there was no version of the galaxy winning.
That is realisitic in the sense that things are not always going to be perfectly right, or extremely wrong.
Videogames these days don't let us think that way anymore.
Even as early as Tales of Symphonia, the ending with Yggdrasil, though there wasn't a choice really... I really felt sorry for Mithos. Don't bother looking up just the ending, you have to experience the entire story to understand.

My point is... I'm sorta stuck in the middle on your endings. Sucks... but I dunno here.
thank you and glad you enjoyed the fanfic :P I do agree that sometimes things will happen regardless of choices, but in that same regard with Mass Effect being what it is, being a "choice" driven game there probably should have been more endings where there is a happy ending like this just different in some regard, more realistic if you will, but where Shepard lives happily ever after with his/her LI, maybe the endings that we got and more and "unique" endings...Perhaps one where the reapers win and harvest the galaxy :P.
but with that said I did create this fic really quickly after finishing the game about 2 days after i beat? the game.
Of course probably regardless of what bioware did there would be fans that wouldn't like whatever ending they got but if they had more unique endings the fans that weren't satisfied with one ending could do a small change somewhere and get to an ending that they do enjoy, but where it stands right now it seems like very few people like any of the Three? ending that there are right now. Perhaps after the extended cut is released it will quell whatever hatred there is over the endings :P probably not but maybe?

When you're writing a story or making a videogame, you aren't supposed to care if the people like it or not.
It's YOUR story to create.
Otherwise we'd be having games that fit our needs instead of expanding out into games like this.
I remember hearing some talk about the Indoctranation Theory and what not and they did some side talking about how in the first game with the Citadel, you couldn't shoot aliens for like an hour and all it was was dialogue.
Some reference about Star Trek... meh.

I found that an interesting idea.

But I do NOT agree with them if they decided to have the real ending in a DLC.
I payed a game for the entire thing, not bits and pieces.
I could really not accept playing a game if I had to buy or even download (even if its free) the ending or a part of the game.

I say this, not including Assassin's Creed II, where they had 2-3 Sequences that were more of fillers then anything and not necessary to the plotline. Also including FF XIII-2's DLC with Sazh which was actually pretty bad ass and it's no wonder they didn't include it. It wasn't part of the main storyline, but it was totally worth watching it. Throw in a poker game... heh.

But anyways.
I've only played 3 honestly.
I found the ending sort of... "meh".
But still, the realistic idea gets to me.

Very good. You've clearly put a lot of thought into this one.

If I were choosing the ending I'd want it would be the following (please bear in mind that this is based on my own personal preferences rather than what I think everyone should do):

The combined fleet gathered through the game manages to overwhelm the Reapers, giving the Crucible time to do what we wanted it to do, send out a wave that wipes out all other Reapers in the Galaxy.

But the Citadel and mass relays survive the blast, no destruction for any of them.

There's a massive celebration by all the races involved wherein Commander Shepard, who survives the game, is treated liek a hero by everyone he knows. He's offered a seat on the Council, but refuses, saying that the life of a politician is not for him.

The Citadel is returned to it's previous place in the galaxy and reconstruction begons on all the damaged homewords attacked by the Reapers.

In recognition for their efforts in helping to defeat the Reapers, the Geth, Quarians and Krogan are all offered seats on the council, which those races accept, thus helping to maintain peace between them. Admiral Raan represents the Quarian, Eve for the Krogan and the Geth are represented by the Prime that speaks to Shepard after the Reaper ion Rannoch is defeated.

The Krogan are united under Wrex, who begins work to help his people recover from centuries of damage by the genophage, which is now cured.

Garrus becomes the new Primarch of Palaven, and begins work to help further ties between the Turians and Earth.

Ashley begins to lead her own squad in Alliance missions, helped by her new second-in-command, James Vega, who is himsefl shaping up to be a fine potential candidate for future Spectre.

EDI and Joker continue to serve as pilots of the Normandy in future Alliance missions, all the while continuing their romantic relationship.

Javik, having now fulfilled his purpose of avenging his people, at first finds it difficult to re-adjust to peace. But eventually finds a place on the Citadel, where he serves as both a teacher to those interested in the now-extinct Prothean race, and as a military advisor to the representitives of various races.

Liara continues to speak to her fathjer and the two become closer, with her work as the new Shadow Broker continuing to make things easier for those who wish to use that knowledge for beneficial purposes.

Cerberus collapses save for a few turncoats who defected because of the Illusive man's continuing descent into Reaper control. They are currently awaiting trial.

Admiral Hacket now serves as humanity's representitive on ther council, with Anderson (who survived) having been elected to lead the Alliance now that their prior leadership was wiped out in the initial Reaper invasion.

The Rachni, in a gesture of good faith by the council for having helped against the Reapers, are given a new world for them to live on. Although wary of each other, both sides continue to maintain a shaky peace.

And as for Shepard, the hero of the day, now tired of fighting, retires from the Alliance military after his recovery. He now accompanies Tali (whom he romanced) back to her homewordl Rannoch to help the resettlement of her people, as well as to help foster relationships between them and the Geth. The two settle down on that spot of land where Tali first saw the sunset of her world, and the two eventually build that home that her father once promised to build for her.

Bit of a sappy ending I know, but it's what I was hoping for.
Thank you glad you enjoyed it :) and you should check out my epilogue narrative to this fic which is linked in description there I expand on what happened after Shepard's choice of the council position :P

The battle in Harbinger's mind was kind of out of place, but I like that his role was bigger than "come down, shoot stuff, don't talk, then fly away".

Noce job. Far better than the real endings.
Thank you and I tried to think of a way for Shepard to face Harbinger in his weakened state and the only thing I could think of was the battle of the mind. Glad you enjoyed it :) and hopefully Bioware will release a DLC that will make the ending be better :P

I didnt really mind the ending, I understand completely why they did it.
But I would LOVE to have this as the ending set, if I may I would reccomend sending this to Bioware immediatly. Perhaps if it gets enough backing by people who read we could get this through

fire this should have been an option would have been the best one to... allowing the species of this cycle to live life on their own terms
thank you and it makes sense for the species to live the cycle on their own terms after you spent an entire game bringing them together :P
